Designated Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar announced on Wednesday that his government will abolish the Office for the Protection of Sovereignty after taking office. which, according to him, was used for political purposes. The Office for the Protection of Sovereignty was established by the outgoing government of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on the basis of a law from December 2023. Its the declared task is to investigate specific activities carried out in the interests of another state or foreign body, organization or natural person, if they are likely to violate or threaten the sovereignty of Hungary.

“We will immediately abolish this fictitious office for the protection of sovereignty, which serves as a political baton and money dispenser,” Magyar declared. The future Hungarian prime minister has mentioned the criticized office several times in the past. On one occasion last year, he said that if his Tisza party won the election, the new government would “sprinkle his place with salt”, the MTI agency recalled.

In response to Magyar’s announcement on Facebook, the head of the office, Tamás Lánczi, wrote that his cancellation “does not make the phenomena he revealed disappear.” In this context, he declared that “foreign political influences and attempts to impose a foreign will on the Hungarian government and society will remain here.”
