Attorney General is questioned this Wednesday (April 29) by the Senate’s CCJ for a vacancy in the STF
The Union’s attorney general, Jorge Messias, said that its “identity is evangelical”, but that “the State is secular”. His voice choked when he told a little about his history and family, at the beginning of the hearing at the Senate’s CCJ (Constitution and Justice Commission) for a vacancy at the Federal Supreme Court, held this Wednesday (29.Apr.2026).
“I would like to say very clearly to the Brazilian nation and to your Excellencies, here a servant of God speaks to you. I have walked with God for 40 years, who has welcomed me since I was a child. I had the fortune of being born into an evangelical family. My parents, Edna and Ed, who assist me, planted the seed of faith very early on, which without a doubt saved my life”these.
Messiah stated that “secularism has been with us since the Republican Constitution in 1891” and that “the constitutional judge must be loyal to secularism”.
“The judge who places his religious convictions above the Constitution is not a judge. Well, having established absolute respect for secularism, I must tell you, as a servant of God, that Christian principles accompany me”he declared.
SABATINA
The CCJ (Constitution and Justice Commission) of the Federal Senate will hold this Wednesday, starting at 9 am, Jorge Messias. He was appointed by the president (PT) to fill the vacancy opened on the Federal Supreme Court after the retirement of minister Luís Roberto Barroso, in 2025.
Messias’ appointment was announced by Palácio do Planalto about 5 months ago, but the official message (MSF 7/2026) was only sent to the Senate on April 1st. Messiah needs to be endorsed by the members of the CCJ and, subsequently, obtain the favorable votes of at least 41 of the 81 senators in the House’s plenary. Both votes are secret.
The president of the Senate, (União Brasil-AP), plans to put Jorge Messias’ name to a vote in the plenary session this Wednesday (April 29), shortly after the conclusion of the process in the commission. The agenda of the day in the plenary will be dedicated exclusively to voting on names nominated by the Executive.
