The outrage over the murder of a five-year-old girl triggered a night of intense violence in a city in the interior of Australia, with clashes between protesters and police forces near a hospital.
Excited crowds demanded that authorities hand over the crime suspect, Jefferson Lewis, 47, arrested on Thursday for the alleged murder of the child, belonging to an indigenous community.
During the protests, police officers were targeted with stones and sticks, while protesters destroyed official vehicles and set fire to a police van. The authorities’ response included the use of tear gas and smoke grenades.
