O Finance Minister, Dario Durigan, admittedin an interview with the program Roda Vivafrom TV Cultura, on Monday night, 4th, that Correios has a problem, but that the new management of the state-owned company is seeking to resolve it. “It’s undeniable, they had a bad result, there was a change of management, Emmanoel [Rondon]who is the current president of Correios, presented a plan that is very good, which involves a series of measures to cut spending, improve revenue, form international partnerships, partnerships within the country, and it is based on this restructuring plan that we have been following this Correios of the future”, said the minister.
Durigan recalled that in In 2025, Correios had a negative result of R$4 billion and, for 2026, an even worse performance is expected, perhaps in the region of R$10 billion. “But, again, it’s an issue that we have to face head on. The Correios has an onus, which is to deliver universality for the whole country. When you talk to private agents, they say that ‘we are more efficient than the Correios, but I don’t deliver judicial notification to the riverside population in Amazonas’. They don’t deliver, the Correios deliver.”
“And, to do this, he has a bigger deficit in the operation. So, in fact, he has a deficit that exists at the Post Office, that needs to be addressed, and I am the biggest defender of this, I do not defend a deficit state. A state-owned company with a deficit must have another way out, another solution”, stated the minister.
When asked about privatization, Durigan said he had no problem with the option, but noted: “I also don’t think privatization is an easy way out, because for a lot of people it’s ‘privatize everything’. He didn’t privatize anything, President Lula ended up privatizing more than the previous government, or making concessions. So, I don’t think it’s a silver bullet either.” Finally, the minister assessed that the Correios are currently undergoing a logistics chain reassessment process. “So, if storage, or delivery of medication, or delivery of judicial notification needs to go through a joint venture process, let it be done. I am very much in favor of flexibility.”
