For many months, Slovaks have been encountering protective elements on various types of food in stores. Such devices work through a transmitter that gives an alert when an item leaves the store. They are taken by staff when customers pay at the register.
Customers could commonly encounter security elements, especially in drugstores, where they were on high-value items – perfumes or aftershave – but today, merchants also secure goods for a few euros, such as butter, honey, canned tuna or meat.

Inflation in the Eurozone accelerated in April, driven by oil prices
The year-on-year inflation rate in the eurozone accelerated significantly this month, which was mainly due to the development of energy prices. TASR informs about this based on preliminary data of the statistical office of the European Union, Eurostat, which the office published on Thursday. The inflation rate reached 3% in April, compared to the 2.6% level in the previous month.
It was most significantly affected by energy prices, which rose by 10.9% year-on-year in April. For comparison, in March they increased by 5.1%. Prices of food, alcohol and tobacco products and non-energy products also experienced an acceleration of growth.
In the first case, growth reached 2.5% compared to 2.4% in March, and in the second, 0.8% compared to 0.5% in the previous month. On the contrary, the growth rate of service prices slowed slightly, although this growth was the second highest after energy price growth.
Prices of services in the euro area increased by 3% in April, while they rose by 3.2% in the previous month. Among the member states, Bulgaria (6.2%), Croatia (5.4%) and Luxembourg (5.2%) reported the most significant inflation. In Slovakia, consumer prices increased by 4% year-on-year in April.
