New report suggests that former Brazilian president was killed by the country’s military dictatorship

Number of victims increases: police operation in Rio de Janeiro caused 132 deaths

This conclusion, anticipated by the newspaper “Folha de S. Paulo”, contradicts the official version that Juscelino, popularly called “JK”, was the victim of a road accident in 1976

A report by the Special Commission on Political Deaths and Disappearances (CEMDP) concluded that former Brazilian president Juscelino Kubitschek was murdered by the military dictatorship, revealed the Brazilian press.

This conclusion, anticipated by the newspaper “Folha de S. Paulo”, contradicts the official version that Juscelino, popularly called “JK”, was the victim of a road accident in 1976.

The Special Commission on the Dead and Missing is a government body made up of seven members and has technical support from the Brazilian Ministry of Human Rights.

According to the report, JK’s death was part of a coordinated action of political repression in the context of Operation Condor, an alliance between South American military regimes during the Cold War.

The report prepared by historian Maria Cecília Adão states that there was manipulation of the investigations at the time, omission of evidence and destruction of documents related to the accident involving JK’s vehicle and a bus.

The document of more than 5,000 pages and the rectification of the death certificate, reported the Brazilian newspaper, must be approved by the CEMDP counselors at a meeting, with no set date yet.

The document also points to evidence of the participation of State agents and recommended the reopening of investigations, in addition to the historical accountability of those involved in the case.

JK’s case was opened by CEMDP in February 2025 by decision of the Brazilian Government, based on an investigation by the Federal Public Ministry, which lasted six years of work (2013-2019), and identified serious flaws in the State’s own investigations.

The MPF discarded the official theory that there was a collision between the bus and JK’s vehicle, but concluded that it was “impossible to confirm or rule out” the hypothesis of a political attack against the former Brazilian president.

Founder of Brasília, Juscelino Kubitschek governed Brazil between 1956 and 1961 and was one of the main civilian opponents of the military regime established in the country in 1964.

His death is seen by the Brazilian press and many historians as one of the strangest and most controversial chapters of the 21-year military dictatorship in Brazil.
