Climate change is a security risk. Not just for people who lose lives and livelihoods as a result of extreme heat, droughts and floods. Not just for animals and plants whose habitats are threatened. The climate crisis represents a concrete risk to the security of states and can increase the risk of conflicts, including military ones. A report from the German Bundeswehr, the Federal Intelligence Service and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research states that one must prepare for the fact that water shortages, famines and natural disasters will increasingly lead to distribution conflicts and refugee movements in the future.
