Finland addressed the alarm over possible drones. After analysis, the army ruled out a violation of the airspace

Finnish authorities announced on Friday afternoon that morning reports about the possible presence of drones in the country’s airspace have not been confirmed. The incident, which caused an alarm and temporarily disrupted air traffic over Helsinki, raised concerns, but no airspace violations were detected, according to official statements. Information about the situation was provided by representatives of the Finnish army at a press conference.

  • Finnish authorities later announced that the suspicion of drones had not been confirmed.
  • The morning reports forced authorities to suspend air traffic over Helsinki temporarily.
  • Residents of the Uusimaa region were told to stay indoors due to suspected drones.
  • The commander of the air force confirmed that there is no evidence of violation of the airspace.
  • Previous downings of Ukrainian drones in Finland has accelerated investments in air defense.

The morning warning was issued by security authorities for the Uusimaa region, which also includes the capital Helsinki. Residents were urged to stay indoors as it was suspected that drones linked to military operations in Ukraine may have strayed into Finland. According to Deputy Chief of the General Staff for Operations Kari Nisula, these were machines that could have deviated during Ukrainian defense operations against the Russian invasion.

No disturbance of space

The commander of the Finnish Air Force, Timo Herranen, confirmed that there is no evidence that drones have actually entered Finnish airspace. “There was no intrusion. The drones were not flying in that direction,” Herranen said. Nevertheless, the situation prompted increased attention and the temporary deployment of fighter jets.

Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo called the flights of Ukrainian drones over the territory of Finland “unacceptable”, but emphasized that the country is not under direct military threat. According to his words, it was not a deliberate targeting of drones to Finland, but a consequence of military operations in Ukraine.

Airport operations resumed

Helsinki Airport, which was forced to suspend operations in the morning, has since resumed its operations. However, passengers must expect possible delays or cancellations of some flights due to the morning restrictions.

Incidents of Ukrainian drones straying into Finland are not new. Several such machines have crashed in the country since the end of March, sparking debate about Finland’s ability to respond to similar situations. At the same time, these events accelerated investments in strengthening air defenses to minimize the risks associated with inadvertent violations of airspace.
