The president of the United States, Donald Trumpannounced this Friday that he will hold a meeting with his security team in the White House crisis room this Friday to take a ‘final decision’ on Iran deal to end the war.
In a publication on his Truth Social network, the Republican president has insisted that the Islamic Republic “must commit to never possessing a nuclear weapon or an atomic bomb” and that the strait Hormuz “must open immediately, without toll”.
He has also stated that, as part of an eventual agreement, the underwater mines in the strait would be deactivated and that the United States would lift the blockade against ships entering and leaving Iranian ports.
In addition, he has said that the United States, in coordination with the Iranian Government and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), would extract the 440 kilos of highly enriched uranium that Tehran possesses for its destruction.
“I will meet now at the crisis room to make a final decision. Thank you for your attention on this matter!” concludes the message.
Confusion
Trump’s message comes after moments of confusion last Thursday following the leak that negotiators from both countries had reached a memorandum of understanding, pending only the final approval of the US president. Hours later, Tehran denied having closed a deal.
According to press leaks, the agreement would allow the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, blocked by Iran in retaliation for the US and Israeli offensive that began on February 28, and would extend the ceasefire for 60 days in force to negotiate a nuclear pact.
Likewise, the United States would lift its naval blockade against Iranian ports and negotiate the lifting of sanctions and the release of frozen Iranian assets.
