The English 'love' the Algarve but say these Portuguese beaches are even better

Portugal continues to establish itself as one of the most popular swimming destinations in Europe, especially during the summer months. Despite the Algarve’s consolidated popularity among foreign tourists, especially English ones, other coastal areas of the country are beginning to gain prominence, seen as alternatives for those looking for less crowded beaches and landscapes different from the usual promotional images of the Portuguese south.

According to the British news portal, several Portuguese destinations outside the Algarve are attracting increasing interest among British visitors. The British publication highlights coastal regions, such as Setúbal, Comporta, Sintra, Cascais and Peniche as options for beach holidays away from the areas most pressured by international tourism.

Alternative to the more touristy Algarve

The publication says that the Algarve continues to be a common choice among British tourists due to its extensive beaches, rock formations and warm climate. Still, growing demand for the region makes finding quiet spaces during peak season more difficult.

Among the alternatives mentioned is Setúbal Bay. According to the same source, beaches such as Galapinhos and Galápos stand out for their transparent water, light sand and proximity to the Arrábida Natural Park.

Beaches between cliffs and nature

The same portal also says that Praia dos Galápos offers simpler access, while Galapinhos requires a longer journey to the sand. In both cases, explains the website, the natural setting and the calm sea are some of the elements most valued by visitors.

The Setúbal region is also presented as a destination associated with gastronomy and maritime activities. According to the same source, dolphin watching tours and fish and seafood restaurants close to the coast remain among the main local attractions.

The coastal area that attracts celebrities

Another highlighted location is Comporta. The publication writes that the region has been gaining international notoriety and has been informally nicknamed the “Portuguese Hamptons”, due to the presence of public figures and foreign buyers.

Despite this growth, the same source considers that the area remains relatively discreet in relation to other European tourist destinations. The long beaches, beach bars and small taverns continue to mark the region’s identity.

Between rice paddies, dunes and pine forests

It is also worth highlighting that Comporta offers several kilometers of continuous sand, as well as areas of pine forest and areas suitable for bird watching. The publication adds that visitors will also find small cafes and restaurants away from the more popular tourist circuits.

Further north, the coast between Sintra and Cascais also appears among the highlights. The same source highlights the diversity of beaches on that coastal strip, from urban coves to wilder areas surrounded by cliffs.

A coast linked to Lisbon

The proximity to Lisbon is highlighted as one of the region’s advantages. According to the Which? portal, staying between Cascais and Sintra allows you to combine beach days with visits to the palaces and historical monuments of the Sintra mountain range.

The publication also mentions Estoril and Praia de São Pedro do Estoril, describing the area as a place with calmer waters and protected by limestone cliffs. According to the same source, coastal vegetation helps to create an environment different from that normally associated with the more touristy coastline.

Peniche enters the list

Finally, Peniche is another destination highlighted by the British publication. Despite frequent comparisons with the rock formations of the Algarve, the same source considers that this area of the west coast offers a distinct experience and more linked to maritime culture.

Note that Peniche maintains a strong fishing identity and continues to be closely associated with surfing and activities linked to the sea. The proximity of the Berlengas archipelago is presented as one of the region’s greatest attractions.
