The most recent victims of shark attacks in Pernambuco, an 11-year-old child and a 19-year-old girl, had limbs amputated due to the severity of the injuries suffered. The Restauração Hospital (HR) Gov. Paulo Guerra reported that the young woman arrived at the unit with her limb amputated, while the child had to undergo the procedure at the hospital.
She was admitted to the unit with an amputation at the thigh level, this Monday (1st). In serious condition, she was intubated and taken directly to the surgical suite. During the afternoon, the surgery was completed so that she could be transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
The 11-year-old child, victim of an incident with a shark last Sunday (31), needed his left leg amputated. The information was confirmed by Hospital da Restauração (HR) Gov. Paulo Guerra. The incident took place on Sunday afternoon (31), in Jaboatão dos Guararapes, in the Metropolitan Region of Recife, in Pernambuco.
According to the hospital, shortly after being admitted to the unit, the child underwent an emergency surgical procedure to amputate the left lower limb and treat a fracture in the left hand. Due to the severity of the injury, the patient also needed a blood transfusion.

“Hospital da Restauração (HR) Gov. Paulo Guerra informs that the 11-year-old child, victim of an incident with a shark, remains hospitalized in the Pediatric ICU, with a serious health condition. Shortly after being admitted to the unit, yesterday, the child underwent an emergency surgical procedure for amputation of the left lower limb and for treatment of a fracture in the left hand. Due to the extent of the injury, the patient needed to receive a blood transfusion. Faced with the need to replace blood stocks, the Hemope Foundation calls on volunteers able to donate blood to contribute to this gesture of solidarity that helps save lives.”
According to the hospital, the child remains stable within the severity of the clinical condition, admitted to the Pediatric ICU and receiving prophylaxis to prevent possible infections resulting from the bite.
The Government of Pernambuco reported that the Pernambuco Military Fire Department (CBMPE) recorded two incidents involving incidents with marine animals on the coast of Pernambuco between Sunday (31st) and Monday (1st).
The CBMPE reinforces that the areas where the incidents occurred are included in State Decree No. 21,402/1999, which warns of marine animals and other marine animals. The corporation advises the population to respect the signage on the beaches, follow the lifeguards’ recommendations and avoid swimming in areas considered at risk.
