Trump administration document cites unfair trade practices and suggests 25% surcharge on Brazilian products
The USTR (United States Trade Representative), the American government body responsible for developing and coordinating the country’s foreign trade policy, opened a public consultation on Brazilian products. The government’s (Republican Party) measure was introduced after an investigation under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, in which the US government cited Brazil’s alleged unfair trade practices.
The document lists topics such as digital commerce, Pix, preferential tariffs, combating corruption, protecting intellectual property, access to the ethanol market and illegal deforestation as targets for the investigation. The proposal includes exceptions for some products and provides for the submission of comments until July 1, 2026, with a public hearing scheduled for July 6. Read , in English (PDF – 915 kB).
