Chinese president will travel to the country from June 8 to 9 and will be received by North Korean supreme leader Kim Jong-un
The CCP (Communist Party of China) announced this Thursday (June 4, 2026) that the president of China, (CCP), will visit North Korea on June 8th and 9th. It will be the Chinese leader’s first trip to the country since 2019.
Xi will meet with. North Korea’s supreme leader, , in the capital Pyongyang. The last time the leaders met was in September last year during a military parade in Beijing. Before this last meeting, the other time they met in person was in 2019.
China and North Korea have been rehearsing a rapprochement after a distancing that has been observed since the Covid-19 pandemic. Services such as direct flights and trains between Beijing and Pyonggyang resumed in March this year.
Since 2019, North Korea has moved closer to Russia than to China. In this 7-year period in which Xi and Kim met only once, the North Korean supreme leader met with Russian leader Vladimir Putin on two occasions, in 2023 and 2024.
The CCP did not say what issues will be discussed at the meeting between Xi and Kim. It is customary for the communist party not to disclose many details of these diplomatic meetings.
Among the topics that can be discussed is Kim’s relationship with the United States. As has already been reported in several international media, the North American president (Republican Party) has already asked Xi for help to discourage the North Korean nuclear program.
In January this year, Xi received the president of South Korea, (Democratic Party, center-right), in Beijing. At the time, the South Korean leader also asked for Chinese help to stop North Korea’s nuclear program.
The South Korean president said Xi’s response was that the issue requires “patience”but that China has followed South Korea’s moves to reduce tensions in the region.
