Air Canada announced this Friday (5) that it is suspending its flights to Cuba indefinitelydue to “political and economic uncertainty” on the island caused by increasing pressure from the United States.
Canadian travelers are fundamental to the tourism sector in Cubabut that revenue has fallen since Washington cut off fuel supplies to the island and threatened to invade it.
Canada’s national airline had announced in February a suspension of its flights to Cuba until November. However, he stated that he wants to offer more security to his customers regarding the possibility of future trips.
“In light of continued political and economic uncertainty regarding Cuba, Air Canada is indefinitely suspending its service to the island,” the Montreal-based company said in a statement.
Last week, Canadian hotel chain Blue Diamond announced the closure of its 62 properties in Cuba.
The fuel embargo in effect since January has left Cuba without diesel for the generators that bolster its deteriorating electrical system. The country has suffered from blackouts lasting up to 22 hours a day and a lack of drinking water.
With transport practically at a standstill, Cuba is also facing food and medicine shortages.
