LGBT+ parade says restrictions on young people are an attack on freedom

Organization questions project approved in the 1st round by the São Paulo Chamber that bans children under 18 from community events

The organization stated this Sunday (June 7, 2026) that attempts to restrict the participation of young people and remove the event from public roads are an attack on freedom of expression, the right to occupy the city and the diversity of Brazilian society.

In a statement sent to the press, the organization said that the Parade “Face anyone who has tried to take you down since the first edition” and evaluated this movement as part of “a conservative wave that seeks to promote the rollback of conquered rights”.

The note was released on the day of the 30th edition of the Parade, held on Avenida Paulista, in São Paulo. The event’s theme is “30 years Parada SP: The street calls, the ballot box confirms” and seeks to relate mobilization on the streets, political participation and defense of the rights of the LGBTQIA+ population.

The event confirmed names from the left to speak, such as (Psol-SP), minister of the General Secretariat of the Presidency, and the federal deputies (Psol-SP) and (Psol-SP).

PROJECT IN THE CHAMBER

The demonstration cites the attempt to restrict the presence of young people and remove the event from public roads. The theme gained strength after the São Paulo City Council approved in the 1st round, on May 20, theauthored by councilor Rubinho Nunes (União Brasil). Read the (PDF — 80 kB).

The text prevents the participation of children and adolescents in public or private events that “allude to or encourage LGBTQIA+ practices”especially the LGBTQIA+ Pride Parade, even with the authorization of those responsible. The proposal also prohibits the occupation and closure of public roads for these events.

To become law, the project still needs to be approved in the 2nd round by the Chamber and then go to sanction or veto by the mayor (MDB).

STOP REACTS TO RESTRICTIONS

In the note, the organizers stated that the street is “the legitimate space for manifestation” and that education for diversity must include all generations.

The organization also said that the Parade is a meeting space between “party and citizenship” and that the image that prevails this Sunday is that of “millions of people occupying the city with colors, music, affection and respect”.

Lawyers interviewed classified the project as unconstitutional. According to the publication, lawyer Ariel de Castro Alves, member of the Commission for the Defense of the Rights of Children and Adolescents of the Federal Council of the (Brazilian Lawyers Organization), said that the proposal violates rights such as equality, freedom of expression, assembly, culture and the exercise of citizenship.
