Alexander Zverev, 29, defeated Flavio Cobolli, 24, by 3 sets to 2 (6/1, 4/6, 6/4, 6/7 and 6/1) this Sunday (7) and won the Roland Garros title in a final that lasted more than four hours. This is the first Grand Slam trophy of the German’s career.
Zverev’s title, currently third in the world rankings, comes after defeat in three finals of the circuit’s most important tournaments: to Dominic Thiem at the 2020 US Open, to Carlos Alcaraz at Roland Garros, in 2024, and to Jannik Sinner at the 2025 Australian Open.
On the way that took him to the Roland Garros final, Zverev defeated Czech Jakub Mensik in the semifinals, who eliminated Brazilian João Fonseca in the quarterfinals of the tournament.
Zverev is the first German to win a Grand Slam in more than 30 years. The last was Boris Becker, who lifted the 1996 Australian Open trophy.
Cobolli, 14th in the world, reached the decision without competing in the semi-final, after Matteo Arnaldi withdrew due to a virus.
