Plane crashes and explodes at Dominican Republic airport; see video

A private plane fell and then exploded this Sunday (7) on the runway at La Romana International Airport, in the east of the Dominican Republic, an airport authority told AFP.

A video posted on social media shows a huge column of smoke at the airportwhile water trucks spread water to try to control the flames.

The director of the Civil Aviation Board, Héctor Porcella, told AFP that the Details of the accident are still unknown.

A local press reports that it is a Gulfstream G200, a private jet with capacity for eight to 18 passengers.

The Dominican Republic, in the Caribbean, is known for its paradisiacal beaches. Tourism is the main economic activity in this country of 11.6 million inhabitants.

The accident occurred in a international private commercial airport which serves the tourist town of La Romana.
