Mexico will become this Thursday (11) the the only country to have hosted three editions of the World Cup. The country hosted the tournament in 1970, when Brazil won its third title, in 1986, when the Argentines won the cup, and now in 2026, when it hosts the event alongside the United States and Canada – the first edition held in three countries. Until then, the The only time a World Cup had been played in more than one country was in 2002, when Brazil won its fourth title. The edition at that time was played in Japan and South Korea.
Present in Group A of the World Cup, Mexico, alongside South Africa, will be the first country to enter the field. The match is scheduled to take place at 4pm, at the Azteca Stadium, in the Mexican capital.
Although Mexico is the only country to host three World Cups, other countries have also hosted the event more than once. They are:
- France (1938 and 1998)
- Italy (1934 and 1990)
- Brazil (1950 and 2014)
- Germany (1974 – 2006)
- United States (1994 and 2026)
Canada, in turn, joins Uruguay, Switzerland, Sweden, Chile, England, Argentina, Spain, South Korea, Japan, South Africa, Russia and Qatar as countries that have hosted the World Cup.
