OpenAI is considering significantly reducing the prices charged for its artificial intelligence products, in an attempt to attract users and gain space over rival Anthropic, according to the Wall Street Journal.
According to the report, the owner of ChatGPT is considering cutting the price of tokens — a unit used by AI companies to measure and charge for the use of their models — given the expectation that Anthropic will adopt a similar move.
Today, OpenAI charges monthly subscriptions in ranges of US$8, US$20 and above US$100 to provide access to its GPT-5.5 models. Anthropic charges US$17 per month for the annual plan for Claude Pro and more than US$100 per month for Claude Max.

The possible reduction comes amid the advancement of the dispute between the two companies in the artificial intelligence market. This week, OpenAI confidentially filed a request for an initial public offering (IPO) in the United States, shortly after Anthropic also submitted its documentation to go public.
At the end of May, Anthropic concluded its Series H round with a valuation of US$965 billion, slightly above the US$852 billion allocated to OpenAI in March.
Race also shows up in usage numbers. In May, ChatGPT became the first app to reach 1 billion monthly users, about three years after its launch, according to Sensor Tower estimates.
OpenAI did not comment on the possibility of price cuts.
