From now on, there is a minimum age to drive scooters in Spain

In Portugal there is no legally defined minimum age for this purpose

Spain will prohibit children under 15 years of age from riding scooters without helmets from October 1st, according to a change in the legislation that regulates traffic circulation approved this Tuesday by the Government.

The changes also cover motorcycle drivers and passengers, who are now required to always wear gloves on interstates and closed shoes on all types of roads, as well as taxi drivers, who from October 1st must always wear a seat belt.

In the case of scooters, users will also have to wear a reflective vest at night, which in the case of professionals (such as people who make deliveries, for example) will always become mandatory. Fines for non-compliance with these rules will be R$200.

The circulation of scooters will also be authorized outside urban centers, but only on roads separate from motor vehicles, such as cycle paths.

As for cyclists, all existing exceptions for wearing helmets on interurban roads have been removed.

Cyclists and motorcycle drivers who use their vehicles for work must also always wear a helmet and reflective vest.

In the case of motorcycles, the new rules allow them to travel on the right shoulder of roads when there is traffic congestion, but with a maximum speed of 30 kilometers per hour.

On the other hand, motorcycle drivers’ helmets must be approved by official authorities, in a new rule that, unlike the previous ones, will only come into force on October 1, 2027.
