The Greek island of Santorini hit several smaller earthquakes on Sunday, with the strongest shock having magnitude 4.6 degrees. Overall, seismologists captured 11 shocks. Therefore, the Minister of Civilis Vasilis Kikilias ordered that they will remain preventively closed on Monday school on the island. According to AFP and Reuters, TASR reports this.
The Ministry said that the earthquake did not cause any damage, it is not related to volcanic activity, but tectonic and in decline. Nevertheless, experts have called on the introduction of preventive measures in schools. At the same time, they called on people to avoid large gatherings in confined spaces and stay outside some built -up areas. They also recommended that they do not enter the small port of Ammoudi and the port of Fira, which mainly serve cruise ships.
Greece’s territory is located on several tectonic breaks and earthquakes are quite common here. The island of Santorini is one of the most popular Greek tourist destinations. It has only 15,500 permanent residents, but in 2023 it was visited by 3.4 million tourists. It is a volcanic island, and the last eruption occurred in 1950.
In the past, Santorini was the place of one of the largest volcanic explosions in recorded history. About 1600 years BC there was a massive eruption on the island, which changed its shape to its present form and, according to historians, significantly contributed to the decline of Minoan civilization.
