Porsche wants to move Cayenne production from Bratislava, employees in Leipzig must agree to lower wages

Porsche is considering moving Cayenne production from Bratislava to Leipzig. This is part of the sharp austerity measures to keep the concern in shape.

The Porsche car company plans to move the production of the Cayenne SUV from Slovakia to its plant in the German city of Leipzig in order to increase capacity utilization, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) newspaper reported on Saturday (June 27). A spokesman for the Porsche company refused to comment on this report. However, he recalled a recent statement by the automaker’s CEO, Michael Leiters, who emphasized that the company remains loyal to its Leipzig plant and added that the firm must take decisive measures to remain competitive. TASR informs about it based on a Reuters report.

The news that Porsche plans to move production of the Cayenne SUV from Bratislava to Leipzig came a day after the German economic monthly Manager Magazin reported that Volkswagen, which is Porsche’s parent company, is considering closing four plants in Germany and reducing the number of jobs by up to 100,000.

They will reduce the salaries of the employees

According to FAZ, the transfer of production to Leipzig is conditional on the employees of the local plant agreeing to a reduction in wages. Earnings in Slovakia are significantly lower than the salaries of Porsche employees in Germany.

According to FAZ, Porsche’s proposal to move production from Bratislava to Leipzig is part of wider measures to reduce costs in the Volkswagen Group. The plan comes after Porsche decided not to renew the contracts of several hundred temporary workers and wants to cut 200 jobs by August through voluntary severance agreements.
