Operation in Maré closes roads, health units and schools in RJ

The Municipal Health Department reported that four clinics stopped operating this morning: Augusto Boal, Adib Jatene, Jeremias Moraes da Silva and the Vila do João Municipal Health Center announced the safer access protocol.

The operation also resulted in closure of sections of the most important roads from Rio de Janeiro. The Yellow Line had sections closed, in both directions, due to police action and due to a burning car on the highway. The road was completely reopened at 9:25 am.

A Red Line was impacted with intermittent closures and also a vehicle that was on fire. After the intervention of firefighters and the Traffic Engineering Company (CET-Rio), the road was reopened.

Understand the operation

The objective of this phase of the operation is arrest members of the Red Commandresponsible for drug trafficking and theft of vehicles and cargo in Complexo da Maré.

The police point out that drug traffickers, leaders of the faction, Rodrigo da Silva Caetano, aka “Motoboy” and Jorge Luís Moura Barbosa, aka “Alvarenga”, are responsible for planning and manage a vehicle theft ring and cargo in the region.

The scheme resulted in the financing of a “little box” of the Red Commandwhich enables the purchase of weapons, ammunition and the payment of an “allowance” to the relatives of faction prisoners, as well as the faction leaders.

Members of the criminal organization received orders from the faction’s leadership, mainly from Edgar Alves Andrade, the Dockto set up logistical support and enable robberies in several neighborhoods in Rio de Janeiro and the Metropolitan Region.
