Are you buying vanilla sugar for holiday baking? Be sure to pay attention to this

Vanillin sugar can often be confused with vanilla sugarespecially during hectic holiday preparations and shopping. However, this product has little in common with real vanilla sugar. What are the differences?

When preparing and very often we use regular sugar and vanilla sugar. Many recipes contain the latter type, but sometimes we can accidentally buy vanilla sugar because they are packed in the same way (usually in small sachets with a capacity of several dozen grams). In addition, they have very similar graphics, the difference is often one letter in the product name.

Vanilla sugar contains vanilla. It is made from beet sugar, which is combined with vanilla pods or vanilla extract. It is characterized by a very intense aroma. It is also a product made of natural ingredients without synthetic additives, which makes it neutral to the body.

Vanilla sugar is usually available in stores under the name: sugar with vanilla, sugar with real vanilla and vanilla sugar. There is no additional letter “N”.

However, this is a mistake, because these two products are very different in terms of composition. Above all there is no real vanilla in vanilla sugar.

Vanillin sugar is produced from synthetic vanilla equivalents such as vanillin or ethyl vanillin. It is a kind of imitation of real sugar with vanilla and may cause allergic reactions in people sensitive to synthetic ingredients contained in it. Therefore, if you are looking for vanilla sugar, it is worth paying attention to the inscriptions on the product sachets. Importantly, this type is often cheaper.

This product can be prepared very quickly at home, and only two ingredients are needed:

  • 1 standard glass of fine sugar (approx. 250 g),
  • 3 vanilla pods.

For starters cut the vanilla pod lengthwise to get to the seeds (only one side is cut, do not cut it lengthwise into two parts). Use the blunt side of the knife to collect all the seeds and put them in a smaller bowl or jar – add sugar and mix thoroughly. Cut the empty vanilla pods into smaller pieces and also add them to the bowl. This way you have ready vanilla sugar.
