For the first time, the Moon was included in the list of places threatened by human action.
The milestone is part of a relationship created by the World Monuments Fund (WMF) to draw attention to cultural heritage at risk around the world and, now, in the Universe.
According to the Fund’s organizers, the inclusion of the natural satellite occurred because the remains of the first space missions to the star represent a remarkable chapter in the history of humanity, but they are increasingly vulnerable given the intensification of human activities on the Moon.
“Objects such as the camera that captured images of the first lunar landing and the memorial disk left by astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin carry unique symbolism, a testimony to the moment when humanity took its first steps beyond Earth,” said CEO of World Monuments Fund, Bénédicte de Montlaur.
UNDERSTAND: The exploration of the Moon, driven mainly by NASA’s Artemis missions, has as its initial objective the study of the natural satellite, but with greater ambitions. In the long term, the agency plans to use these missions to test technologies and equipment that will be crucial for future crewed trips to Mars. But this is something that should only happen at the end of the next decade, at best.
In addition to the Moon, other important places are on the list, such as the ancient city of Antakya, in Türkiye, and the historic center of Gaza.
The Swahili coast, in Africa, and the Sorbonne Chapel, in France, are also among those chosen by the Fund. In total, the locals represent 29 countries on five continents and face problems such as climate change, excessive tourism, armed conflicts and even natural disasters.
