El Salvador’s president was received at the White House by Donald Trump this Monday. The visit came after Nayib Bukele became one of Donald Trump’s greatest allies in the Americas and the most important in Central America, thanks to his willingness to receive hundreds of thousands of migrants, deported by the administration, in compliance with a stricter migratory policy. Trump insisted that all deported had committed crimes on US soil and that most of them belonged to violent gangs, such as Aragua’s Tren, made up of Venezuelan migrants. But human rights organizations, such as Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, denounce the authorities of El Salvador and the US for breach of the basic rules of the rule of law. Most deported were placed in a mega-prison known as the Terrorism Detention Center or Cecot, without being convicted of any crime.

There are also reports of migrants, with permanent resident status in the US, deported without any justification, such as Salvadoran Kilmar Garcia, that the US Supreme Court says it should return to the state of Maryland, even though Bukele has said he won’t do so.
