Football, like life, is rich in stories. Happy is the one who has friends to share memories and report recent or not so much events that bring some feeling.
I am not an encyclopedia of football – so was called Nilton Santos, two -time world champion with Brazil (1958 and 1962), due to its vast football knowledge – but I like to divide causes when there is opportunity.
Report here one, occurred on October 4, 1975, in Lima. I was 2 years old, so this report is not of my memory but of content recorded by various sources, including this Sheet.
It came to me by chance, when I researched relevant football facts that occurred 50 years ago. I didn’t know, I liked to know and maybe you enjoy it.
That year was the 30th edition of the Copa America, bringing together ten South American teams, the first of three without a single headquarters. It lasted a few months, with roundtime games between the participants.
The competition was dominated by Argentina (12 titles) and Uruguay (11). The Brazilians tried the fourth trophy (won in 1919, 1922 and 1949, always in Brazil) and the Peruvians, the second (won in 1939 as host).
Champions of their groups, Brazil and Peru were paired in one of the semifinals. In the first leg in Mineirão, visitors, led by the Cracker Teófilo Cubillas, won 3-1.
In the return match, on a late afternoon of Saturday in the Peruvian capital at the Alianza stadium, Brazil was scaled by Osvaldo Brandão: Waldir Peres, Nelinho, Vantuir, Piazza and Getúlio; Vanderlei, Zé Carlos and Geraldo (Palhinha); Roberto Batata, Campos (Roberto Dinamite) and Romeu Carneahota.
With a goal against, from Meléndez, and another from Campos, Brazil won 2-0. One victory for each side, zero goal balance. The regulation did not foresee penalty shootout for the tiebreaker, but a draw. It is performed, according to the game at the headquarters of the Peruvian Football Federation.
Papers with the inscriptions “Brazil” and “Peru” placed in a container, chosen to remove one of them was a 14-year-old girl, Verónica, daughter of Teófilo Salinas, a Peruvian who headed Conmebol (South American Confederation) at the time.
He gave Peru, and the Brazilian team suspected maracutaia. The players wanted the definition to have been on the field in a “face or crown.”
It was disseminated that Veronica took a red and white ball with the letter P (turkey), not a piece of paper-balls with balls can be manipulated with one that is cold, instructing the draw to choose it. This version has never been proven.
In the final of the competition, the Peruvians surpassed the Colombians.
Eight years later, in 1983, it was the turn of Brazil to win a draw at the Copa America, also in the semifinal, against Paraguay. After a 1-1 draw in Asuncion and 0-0 in Uberlândia, the penny favored the team of coach Carlos Alberto Parreira, who later, in the decision, lost from Uruguay.
Cases of other times, cited by the specificities and for no longer in memory or are unknown.
