These two cities in Portugal are one of the most expensive in the world for dinner and none is in the Algarve

An international study evaluated the cost of dining out in different cities around the world, taking into account the price practiced in restaurants considered common and the average monthly income of each locality. The analysis shows that Portugal is represented among the least affordable places in the ranking.

According to the NIT portal, the two highlighted Portuguese cities are Lisbon and Porto. Chef’s Pencil magazine, founded in 2009, compiled a list of 177 cities, using Numbeo data, a database that monitors the cost of living and wages in several countries. Although not considered as rigorous as official statistics, the publication stresses that this tool is useful for identifying global trends.

How the calculation was done

According to the same source, the methodology took into account the average price of a meal of three dishes for a person in a middle range restaurant, compared to the average monthly net salary of each city. The results revealed significant differences between regions, with situations where dinner outside can be up to 25 times more expensive in a city than in another.

In the case of Lisbon, the magazine explains, the average price of a meal was calculated in about 30 euros, which represents 2.2% of the average monthly salary, set at 1,340 euros. The Portuguese capital thus appears in 119th place in the table. The port is not distant and occupies the 116th position.

Comparison with other European capitals

He writes that dinner in cities such as Berlin, Madrid or Rome proves to be more affordable. In the table, the German capital appears in 34th place, Madrid in 69 and Rome in 97, all better positioned than Lisbon and Porto.

It adds the publication that, although Portuguese cities are away from the top, the logic of the ranking dictates that the lowest positions correspond to cities where dinner outside represents greater weight in the budget. Thus, the fact that Lisbon and Porto are in these places shows precisely their lower relative accessibility.

The most expensive and the most affordable cities

It should be noted that Caracas in Venezuela; And Lagos, Nigeria, are among the least accessible cities in the world for meals in restaurants. On the other side of the painting, Dallas appear in the United States; Osaka, in Japan; Bern in Switzerland; and Singapore, where the relative weight of dinner in average monthly yield is substantially lower.

The analysis thus suggests that dinner outside in Portugal may represent a relatively greater financial effort than in several European capitals, reflecting the undoing between income and prices practiced in the restoration.
