On September 19, Radharani decided to visit the Ministrão bar after work because there was a birthday party for her acquaintance. Despite the fact that she spent the evening drinking various cocktails, apart from the symptoms of drunkenness, the woman had no other problems. That changed two weeks after the celebration. When she woke up, she wasn’t feeling well and found herself completely blind. Therefore, she was immediately taken to the hospital, where she ended up in the intensive care unit.
Her sister Lalila explained that doctors initially suspected a stroke. But when the treatment did not work, they carried out further tests, which revealed traces of methanol in her body. It is a poisonous substance that can cause serious brain damage even in small doses. “Especially the eyes are directly affected, which can cause blindness,” revealed Dr. Christopher Morris.
225 cases of methanol poisoning were confirmed in Brazil, mostly in Sao Paulo. Radharani is one of the first patients to speak publicly about her symptoms. “For a while I thought I was going to see walls, but I was just guessing. They poisoned me and are doing it to other people. It’s disgusting that you order a regular cocktail and get methanol“, she said.
Although she was recently released from the hospital, she still has problems with her eyesight. “I was relieved to be able to go home, but then I panicked. I am a very active person and now I depend on the help of others. It cannot be described,” remarked a devastated Radharani.
