Lula-Trump: Brazil hopes for pause in tariffs

Brazilian diplomacy has set as its main objective the discussion on the tariffs imposed by the American government on Brazilian products during the possible meeting between Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Donald Trump in Malaysia this weekend. The investigation is by Clarissa Oliveira in Live CNN.

“As President Lula himself indicated, there is the possibility of several issues entering this discussion”, explains the Politics analyst at CNN. “Especially considering that it is sacramentalized.” However, Brazilian diplomacy’s preference is for the tariff issue.

Expectations and Strategies

“The idea is to leave this meeting with at least a willingness from the American government to, as long as the negotiations continue”, said the analyst. “It would be a way to greatly alleviate the situation for Brazil and demonstrate good faith for an agreement later on, but everyone is aware that a trade agreement of this magnitude cannot be made overnight.”

The economic aspect of tariffs is considered more urgent for Brazil than diplomatic or geopolitical issues. An eventual suspension, even if temporary, would represent an important advance in commercial relations between the two countries, allowing negotiations to continue in a more favorable environment.
