Black poplar (Latin: Populus nigra) is a tree that has dominated European landscapes for centuries. In the past, it was planted along roads, and today it is increasingly found in private home gardens and recreational plots. This is due to how quickly it grows – plant it when you want an immediate effect and a green privacy barrier.
Its greatest advantages:
- – up to 2 meters per year! Within a few seasons it reaches 15-20 meters,
- dense crown – effectively protects against sun, wind and… neighbors’ eyes,
- immunity – coping great in Polish climatic conditions and on average soils,
- low care requirements – just watering in the first year and occasional pruning.
Black poplar not only protects your privacy, but also purifies the air by absorbing large amounts of carbon dioxide.
It is not very demanding, all it needs is a bit of space and access to light. But to make it grow as quickly as possible, take care of its needs at the planting stage.
- Choose the right place. Poplar likes the sun and does not like shade. It grows perfectly at fences, plot boundaries or along the access road.
- Keep your distance. Plant seedlings every 3-4 meters – after a few years, their crowns will merge into a natural hedge.
- Water and leave alone. The first year is the most important time for regular watering. Then the poplar will cope on its own – the roots go deep, so it is not afraid of drought.
There’s more to black poplar than that quick shade and natural screen from neighbors. It is also a way to create your own microclimate:
- in summer it lowers the temperature in the garden by even a few degrees,
- stops dust and noise,
- attracts birds – a bit of nature at its best.
However, one thing must be honestly mentioned: . Therefore, do not plant it right next to a building, a fence with a foundation or a home sewage treatment plant.
If you want a similar effect, but on a smaller scale – you can choose the Populus nigra ‘Italica’ variety (i.e. Italian poplar) – grows vertically and takes up less space.
If you want your plot to gain shade, privacy and a natural atmosphere, but you don’t have the patience to wait ten years, consider planting a black poplar there. Just a few seedlings are enough, and in a few seasons you will have the green fortress that plot owners dream of.
