Putin announces successful test of nuclear missile with “unlimited range”

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced this Sunday (26) a successful test of the Burevestnik nuclear cruise missile, described by Moscow as a weapon with “unlimited range” and capable of bypassing all known defense systems.

The announcement comes amid the Russian offensive in Ukraine and the diplomatic impasse with the United States, after American President Donald Trump downplayed the chances of a new summit with Putin.

“The decisive tests are now complete,” Putin said in a video released by the Kremlin. “I ordered the preparation of infrastructure to put this weapon into service with the Russian Armed Forces. It is a unique creation, which no one else in the world has.”

The Burevestnik missile

According to the chief of the Russian General Staff, Valery Gerasimov, the missile flew for around 15 hours and covered 14,000 kilometers in the last test, on October 21, but has not yet reached its maximum limit.

“The technical characteristics of the Burevestnik allow it to hit highly protected targets at any distance,” Gerasimov stated.

The Burevestnik project was announced by Putin in 2018, as part of a new strategic arsenal developed to evade United States anti-missile systems.

Seven years later, the successful test marks a symbolic breakthrough for Moscow amid the protracted war in Ukraine, where Russian troops have been gradually gaining ground.

While displaying military power, Putin faces frozen relations with Washington. Trump, who had promised to mediate a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine upon returning to the White House, acknowledged on Friday (24) that his talks with the Kremlin “are leading nowhere”.

“I’m not going to waste my time,” said the American president when asked about the possibility of a new meeting with Putin.

Days earlier, Trump had imposed sanctions on the two largest Russian oil companies, in retaliation for the lack of progress in ceasefire negotiations.

According to Russian government sources, negotiator Kirill Dmitriev held meetings with American officials on Friday and Saturday, but without concrete progress.

Putin, in turn, stated that he does not intend to set deadlines for the end of the war, indicating that military decisions will remain “based on strategic rationality”.
