Brussels calls on Tanzania to stop post-election violence and release politicians

The European Union urges Tanzania to prevent post-election violence. The situation in Brussels is worrying.

The European Union on Sunday called on authorities in Tanzania to prevent further violence following presidential elections in which Samia Suluhu Hassan was re-elected. TASR informs about it according to the report of the AFP agency.

“The credible reports of a large number of casualties and serious injuries are extremely worrying. The EU urges the authorities to exercise maximum restraint in order to protect human lives,” EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said in a statement.

The Union is worried

She said the EU was “deeply concerned” by the ongoing violence, blocking of internet access and reports of irregularities during the elections.

“The EU calls for the release of all detained politicians and for a transparent and fair trial for those who have been arrested,” Kallas emphasized, calling for a thorough investigation into the reported cases of violence and kidnappings.

According to the official results, President Hassanová won Wednesday’s election with a significant margin, receiving almost 98 percent of the vote. A number of leading opposition figures were jailed or barred from running before the vote. The election itself sparked a wave of street protests in the country, during which, according to the opposition, hundreds of people died after the intervention of the security forces.
