On Saturday, British police arrested two suspects who stabbed several people on a train near the East English town of Huntingdon. A total of 10 people were hospitalized, while nine of them are in a serious condition and their lives are in danger. TASR informs about it according to AFP and BBC television.
“We are currently responding to an incident on a train heading to Huntingdon where multiple people have been stabbed,” the British Transport Police said on the social network X. The police confirmed that they will work with the counter-terrorism unit in the investigation.
Transport Police Chief Commissioner Chris Casey called the attack “shocking incident” and said he would not speculate on the motive of the perpetrators. “It may take some time before we can confirm more information,” he said.
The British have already commented on the situation Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who described the attack as “appalling and extremely disturbing.”
The London North Eastern Railway (LNER) has temporarily suspended all services on its lines and urged people to avoid travel.
The number of knife attacks in Britain has been increasing since 2011, according to official government figures. Starmer described the increasing attacks as “a national crisis.” As part of the government’s efforts to halve the number of knife crimes over ten years, England and Wales therefore “confiscated or handed over” almost 60,000 knives, the Ministry of the Interior said on Wednesday.
