Robotic surgery, which began in July, “has revolutionized” the way surgical interventions are performed.
The Robotic Surgery program in orthopedics at the Local Health Unit (ULS) of Coimbra, the only national public entity that has this technology, exceeded 100 surgeries at the General Hospital (Covões).
“Since the beginning of the implementation of this advanced technology, We have dedicated efforts to offer our patients more precise, less invasive procedures with faster recovery“, highlighted Fernando Fonseca, director of the Orthopedics Service, in a statement.
The specialist stressed that robotic surgery, which began in July, “has revolutionized” the way surgical interventions are performed“allowing greater precision, lower risks of complications and better results”.
“During this time, it was possible to perform innovative surgeries at national and international level.“, he stressed.
The Coimbra ULS also said that, on Friday, the surgical team carried out bilateral implantation of robotic knee prostheses (performed for the first time in the country), “a procedure carried out in special and infrequent circumstances”.
According to that entity, bilateral prosthesis surgery, performed using robotics, “represents not only a medical advance, but also an opportunity for complete transformation in the clinical approach and patient experience.”
The precision of robotic technique allows less surgical aggression, faster recovery and less pain in the rehabilitation process.
This surgery was performed by the following team: Fernando Fonseca and Diana Bicas (specialists in Orthopedics); Margarida Pereira (specialist in Anesthesiology); and Ricardo Branco, Ana Ferreira and Catarina Antunes (nurses).
For Alexandre Lourenço, president of the board of directors, “this technological advance demonstrates the commitment of ULS de Coimbra to developing answers at the General Hospital as a health unit at the forefront of modern medicine, in the search for the best solutions for the health of our users”.
“Carrying out the 100th robotic surgery in Orthopedics reinforces ULS Coimbra’s commitment to providing quality healthcare and promoting the health and well-being of our community. We will continue our mission of transforming lives, both through technological innovation and human care”, he highlighted.
The Robotic Surgery in Orthopedics program at ULS in Coimbra resulted from an investment in the General Hospital (Covões) of two million euros in the acquisition of the Robotic Arm Assisted Surgery System and a further two million euros to update the image navigation systems.
