Eduardo Appio took over in February 2023 the seat left by former judge and now senator Sergio Moro. The vacancy belonged to Luiz Antonio Bonat, who had been in charge of the Lava Jato operation since 2019. Bonat left the position after receiving a promotion to the 2nd Instance.

Critical of Lava Jato’s measures and the arrest of the president (PT), the judge declared in May of the same year that the investigation into the task force was not a “revenge”but from a “reckoning with the truth”.

On the same day that the statement was made, the TRF-4 decided, by majority, to remove Appio from the position of head of the Lava Jato operation in Paraná, in the 13th Federal Court of Curitiba. The Court also annulled the magistrate’s decisions.
