Sport and Flamengo faced each other this Saturday (15/11), at Arena de Pernambuco, in a delayed game of the 12th round of the Brazilian Championship. The confrontation resulted in Sport’s relegation and Flamengo’s leadership in this round.
Sport has 17 points from 33 games. There are five matches left until the end of the championship. Fortaleza, 19th, has 31 points. Juventude has 32 and Santos opens the relegation zone with 33.
Is Sport already relegated?
Last placed, Sport has five games to play and, if they win them all, they will reach 32 points. The score is the same as Juventude, 18th. The first team outside the drop zone is Vitória, with 35 points. I.e, Sport is no longer able to escape relegation to the second division.
The Pernambuco team entered the field against Flamengo still with a mathematical chance of staying, but the percentage was very small, as the team had a 99.99% probability of relegation.
Leão from Pernambuco would only be able to get out of the relegation zone if they won all their matches, including the one against Flamengo this Saturday. They would even be able to equal Santos on points by drawing one of the games, but they would lose in the tiebreaker due to the number of victories.
Furthermore, they would have to hope for their direct opponents to stumble. Therefore, the duel at Arena de Pernambuco was crucial and the 5-1 defeat decreed Sport’s official relegation to Série B in 2026.
