Israeli President Herzog hopes that Netanyahu’s talks with Trump will contribute to the fight against the Iranian regime, while the US is considering increasing its military presence in the Middle East. The discussion will also touch on the situation in Gaza and future peace.
Israeli President Yitzhak Herzog expressed hope that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s talks with US President Donald Trump, which will take place in Washington on Wednesday, will help in the fight against Iran’s “evil empire”. TASR informs about it according to the report of the AFP agency.
In short:
- The Israeli president hopes for the success of the negotiations with the USA.
- Netanyahu wants Trump to take a tougher stance on Iran.
- Trump is considering strengthening the US military presence.
- Herzog supported the Jewish community in Australia after the attack.
- Herzog’s visit sparked protests in Australian cities.
Netanyahu is making his sixth visit to the United States since Trump took office for the second time. As he stated, he will urge the US president to take a tougher stance on Iran’s ballistic missile program.
On the eve of the meeting at the White House – which is scheduled to start at 11:00 local time (17:00 CET) – Trump said he was considering sending a second US aircraft carrier to the Middle East to put pressure on Tehran to reach a nuclear deal.
They will discuss Gaza
The United States and Iran have resumed talks on Tehran’s nuclear program since last Friday, which they suspended after the 12-day Israeli-Iranian war last June. Trump later ordered the strengthening of the US military presence in the Persian Gulf region.
Speaking in Canberra alongside Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Herzog wished both “success in bringing peace and undermining the evil empire emanating from Tehran”. The Israeli president also added that they would discuss “the next phase in Gaza, which is important for all of us and which I hope will bring a better future for all.”
The purpose of Herzog’s four-day visit is to express support for the Australian Jewish community after the December shooting on Bondi Beach in Sydney, in which 15 people were killed during the Hanukkah celebration, writes AFP. However, his installation sparked protests in major Australian cities by people who disagree with Israel’s actions in the Palestinian territories.
Chaos and clashes broke out in central Sydney on Monday night as police tried to prevent a crowd from marching into an area of the city designated a “no-go zone”. During clashes in the city’s business district, police officers used defensive spray against protesters and members of the media, including an AFP photographer.
