Research: Cell phone theft increases during Carnival, but drops in megablocks

A survey carried out by FECAP (Fundação Escola de Comércio Álvares Penteado) points out that the The number of robberies and cell phone thefts increases in the city of São Paulo during the month in which Carnival is celebrated — which this year falls in February — compared to other months of the year.

FECAP carried out the research based on the analysis of police reports registered during the period by the Public Security Secretariat (SSP).

According to the research, in the month of March 2025, when the Carnival festivities took place last year, there was a 3.2% increase in the number of occurrences compared to the 2024 festivities, which took place in February of that year.

On the other hand, occurrences on roads that concentrate megablocks recorded a drop almost by half when comparing the holidays of 2024 and 2025.

For FECAP researcher Erivaldo Vieira, the drop in occurrences in higher concentrations represents a change in the . Vieira pointed out and use of drones as strategies to discourage criminals from taking action.

“There was an important advance in the integration between overt policing, monitoring and investigation, which allowed for faster responses and more precise interventions in critical points”, says the professor.

Roads that traditionally concentrate large blocks showed significant drops, such as Avenida Paulista (-41%), Avenida Marques de São Vicente (-44%) and Avenida Auro Soares de Moura Andrade (-60%).

On the other hand, the survey showed regions that had a sudden growth in relation to the crimes mentioned. The majority are located in the central area of ​​the capital. They are: Rua Treze de Maio (258%), Rua Rui Barbosa (85%), Rua Coronel Xavier Toledo (42.9%) and Avenida Brigadeiro Luís Antônio (30.8%).
