Get ready: the biggest arena on the planet will not be in Europe or the United States
Vietnam announced the construction of Trong Dong Stadiumin Hanoi, with capacity for 135 thousand people and delivery scheduled for August 2028.
“Trong Dong” means “Bronze Drum” in Vietnamese — and the arena’s design is exactly inspired by an ancient bronze drum from the Dong Son culture, one of the country’s most powerful symbols.
The result promises to be impressive: a circular structure with a giant retractable roof, the largest in the world using this system.
O investment is colossal: around R$185 billion (part of an even larger Olympic sports complex, costing tens of billions of dollars).
It will be a multi-purpose arena for football (FIFA standard), international shows, festivals and exhibitionsintegrated into a huge multi-sports center.
The project is part of Vietnam’s ambition to host global mega-events. With 102 million inhabitants, a fast-growing economy and a single-party government, the country wants to place itself on the world sporting map.
A The biggest chunk of money comes from billionaire Phạm Nhật Vượng (Vietnam’s richest man, owner of Vingroup), with official government endorsement and support.
While the creators are betting on the boom in shows, K-pop and events in the country to justify the scale, independent critics warn: The Vietnamese events market still cannot support regularly filling such a large arena.
There is a real risk of becoming a “white elephant” — expensive, imposing and underutilized. It is another chapter in the bold trajectory of Phạm Nhật Vượng, who loves megalomaniacal projects: build first and create demand later.
The huge bronze drum is rising in Hanoi. The future will tell if it was a brilliant vision or overconfidence.
And you, what do you think? Will it be a historic landmark or a monument to exaggeration?
