In Latvia, two people were rescued from an iceberg floating in the Baltic Sea. The two went for a walk in the evening on the partially frozen sea near the village of Plienciems when a large chunk of ice broke free and floated several kilometers from the coast. Referring to the rescue services, the local media reported on this on Sunday, writes TASR according to the DPA agency.

  • Two people were rescued from an ice floe in the Baltic Sea near Latvia.
  • They got stuck after walking on the frozen sea near the village of Plienciems.
  • Rescuers found them in the Gulf of Riga after a five-hour search.
  • The rescue was complicated by darkness and large moving ice floes.
  • Both were taken to Riga and received medical attention.

Called rescuers found the couple stranded in the Gulf of Riga after five hours of intensive search with the help of an icebreaker. In freezing weather, they were transported from the ice to the deck by a crane ship, a video released by the port of Riga shows.

The search at sea was made difficult by darkness and large ice floes, which significantly limited maneuvering possibilities. The rescued were brought to the port of Riga around 3:00 a.m. and provided with medical care, Latvian authorities announced.
