Suspect confessed to the crime and claimed to have ‘heard voices’ telling him to kill someone; the victim, Nadia Gavanski, dedicated 55 years to religious life
An 82-year-old nun was suffocated to death this Saturday afternoon (21) after a man invaded the Convent of the Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculatein the municipality of Ivaí, in Campos Gerais do Paraná. The victim was identified as Nadia Gavanski. The 33-year-old suspect He was arrested red-handed for the murder.
According to the Civil Police of Paraná (PCPR), a team from the Military Police (PM) was the first to arrive at the scene and found the nun lying on the floor, with her clothes partially removed and obvious signs of physical aggression. The nun reportedly tried to defend herself from the suspect during the attack.
A photographer who was recording an event at the convent reported to the police that she was approached by the suspect shortly after the crime. He was nervous, had bloody clothes and scratches on his neck. He said he worked there and had found the nun already fallen. Suspicious, the witness discreetly recorded part of the conversation and asked other people to call for help and the police. In the meantime, the man left the convent.
Based on the video recorded by the photographer, the police identified the suspect, who already had a record of robbery and theft. He was located at home. Upon noticing the approach of the police, tried to escape and resisted the approach with punches and kicks, but was contained by the military. When questioned, he admitted to having murdered the nun. The suspect’s defense was not located.
Suspect confesses to crime
At the police station, the man confirmed that he spent the morning consuming crack and alcohol. He also said that he heard voices ordering him to kill someone and, therefore, he jumped over the convent wall with the intention of taking someone’s life. According to the report, when approached by the nun, he stated that he worked there. Faced with the nun’s distrust, he pushed her. When she fell and started screaming, she put her fingers in the victim’s mouth to cause suffocation.
“He denied directly hitting her head, although he admitted that head injuries may have occurred during the fall. He also denied any act of sexual violence against the victim or intention to steal objects“, informed the Civil Police to Estadão.
The police stated, however, that the circumstance of the If the victim has his or her clothes partially removed, it will be analyzed after the expert reports are completed, to verify possible sexual crimes.
One of the sisters at the convent said that, after lunch, the nun used to go to the place where the crime took place to feed chickens.
The man was charged with qualified homicide, with evidence of a futile motive, asphyxiation and a resource that made it difficult for the victim to defend himself, in addition to resisting arrest. He was sent to the penitentiary system. The Civil Police continues to investigate the case

In a statement, the Convent of the Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate mourned the death of Nadia Gavanski and reported that the sister dedicated 55 years to religious life. The entity also said that she was the victim “of an unjustifiable act of violence”.
“We inform you that the institution is fully collaborating with the public security authorities so that the circumstances of this tragic homicide are clarified and justice is served”, says an excerpt from the statement.
