Storm destroyed the Sete Montes National Forest in Tomar

Depression Kristin changed the landscape in the city of Tomar, recovery could take decades.

Storm Kristin left a trail of destruction in the Sete Montes National Forest, in Tomar.

In just a few hours, what took decades to grow it was lost due to the force of the wind. Centuries-old trees fell and Charolinha – a small 16th century temple in the middle of the forest – was practically destroyed.

On fauna the impact would have been smaller. The animals’ ability to move has allowed many species to find shelter in other areas.

The space with almost 40 hectares, known as ‘the lungs’ of the city of Tomar due to the diversity of species that exist here, was closed to the public and there is still no estimate of when it will reopen.

Access remains closed for security reasons while work is underway to remove the trees and assess the damage.

Located next to the Convent of Christ, the Sete Montes National Forest was a place of sustenance and gathering frequented by members of the Order of Christ.

Over time, it also became a place of leisure and celebration. It is here that the boards gather before the great procession of the emblematic Festa dos Tabuleiros which takes place every four years.
