Exchanging an item without presenting your purchase receipt is not always impossible. Although proof is the most direct means of validating the acquisition, there are other ways of demonstrating that the purchase was made and, in certain cases, proceeding with an exchange or complaint.
Legal guarantee remains
In Portugal, consumer goods have a legal guarantee. According to DECO PROteste, a consumer protection association, if a defect arises, the consumer can request repair, replacement, price reduction or termination of the contract. The applicable solution depends on the analysis of the specific case and not just the customer’s choice. The problem must be communicated to the seller by a means that allows proof, such as email or letter.
The deadline for exercising these rights is two years from delivery of the product. In situations of disagreement, it is possible to turn to consumer support bodies.
How to prove a purchase without a receipt
The absence of the bead complicates the process, but does not automatically prevent it. A proof of payment via ATM can help, as it includes data such as the date, amount, terminal and identification of the establishment. Although it does not detail the product purchased, it allows you to confirm that a transaction took place at that location.
If the CPF was provided at the time of purchase, the store can locate the record in the system. The same happens with customer cards or loyalty programs, which store the history of purchases associated with the consumer.
Some establishments maintain electronic files that allow specific sales to be identified based on this data, facilitating the validation of the purchase.
Defect-free exchanges are not mandatory
When the item does not present any problem, the law does not oblige the merchant to accept the exchange in a physical store. In these cases, everything depends on the establishment’s commercial policy.
In online shopping, the situation is different. The consumer has 14 days to return the product without needing to justify, as long as they respect the conditions set out for the right of free resolution.
Conditions imposed by stores
Even when accepting voluntary exchanges, many stores require that the item be in perfect condition and with the original packaging. Finding out about deadlines and rules before purchasing avoids setbacks.
Cash payments make the process more difficult
If the purchase was paid in cash and no identifying data was provided, it becomes more complicated to prove the transaction. In these cases, the decision may depend exclusively on the merchant’s availability.
Although the receipt is the most direct proof, it reminds you that there are alternatives that allow you to validate the purchase and make an exchange or complaint when necessary.
