The crash of a military helicopter claimed 15 lives: the only survivor was a pet

Only a small dog, whose owner was on board, survived Sunday’s crash of a military helicopter in Peru. The AFP agency was informed about this on Tuesday by a source from the Peruvian Air Force, writes TASR.

The Mi-17 helicopter lost radio contact on Sunday afternoon and a day later the Peruvian Air Force found 15 dead people in its wreckage in the Arequipa department in the south of the country. Among the victims were seven children.

Rescuers found the dog next to the body of its owner, 50-year-old Colonel Javier Nole, who was on board with his wife and two daughters. “He’s Colonel Nole’s pet, the only survivor,” an anonymous source told AFP. Local media reported that the dog was taken to a veterinary clinic as a precaution.

The Russian-made helicopter took off from the city of Pisco in the department of Ica. Rescuers located him approximately 300 kilometers away in the town of Chala Viejo in Arequipa. He was deployed in rescue operations to help victims of floods that caused extensive damage. The Peruvian Air Force has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
