Polish mountain rescuers have declared the third level of avalanche danger in the Tatras and warn of weak snow binding on steep slopes. Movement in the field requires experience and great caution.
The Polish Tatra Mountain Rescue Service (TOPR) declared a third – increased level of avalanche danger for the Polish part of the Tatras on Wednesday. The Warsaw correspondent TASR informs about it.
According to the rescuers, the snow is weakly bound on several steep slopes, while even a small additional load can trigger an avalanche. Rarely, even large avalanches can start spontaneously.
Avalanche warning
Conditions are adverse and movement in the terrain requires a high level of experience, equipment and the ability to assess local risk. It is recommended to avoid steep slopes. Strong winds are also expected on Wednesday, creating dangerous snowdrifts, especially in ridge areas and lower terrain.
According to the PAP agency, this winter in the Tatras was poor in terms of snowfall, despite the long-lasting hard frosts that plagued most of the country. For example, on Kasprom vrch, on Wednesday, the snow cover exceeded one meter for the first time this winter.
