Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the STF (Supreme Federal Court), stated that former councilor Marielle Franco (Psol-RJ), who died in 2018, was “supporting the interests of militia members” at the time she was murdered. The minister’s statement took place during a session of the First Panel of the Supreme Court that identified those involved in the crime.
Moraes also cited the ex-sergeant’s testimony murderer of the councilwoman, who stated that those in charge were not worried about the repercussions of the crime.
“Marielle was a poor black woman who was supporting the interests of militiamen […] In the misogynistic and prejudiced minds of those in charge and executors, who would care about that? A 100-year-old head, 50 years ago: ‘Ah, let’s eliminate it and it will have no repercussions’”, said the magistrate in his vote.
Among those accused of being the they are the brothers Domingos and Chiquinho Brazão. At the time, Domingos was a counselor at the TCE-RJ (Rio de Janeiro State Audit Court) and Chiquinho, a councilor in the capital of Rio de Janeiro.
According to the complaint filed by the PGR (Attorney General’s Office), the brothers had ordered the murder of the councilwoman for economic interests linked to land regularization in areas of the west zone of Rio dominated by militias. Marielle would have political clashes with her brothers over urban regularization and land use projects.
In addition to Marielle, the driver, Anderson Gomes, who was with her at the time, was also killed. The PGR alleges that the murders were committed with the promise of a reward to the executors and with the aim of protecting irregular real estate deals.
