Rubio will hold a call with G7 colleagues this Saturday

United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio will hold a call with his counterparts from G7 countries this Saturday (28) to discuss the situation in Iran, a State Department official told CNN.

The G7 is made up of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States, in addition to the European Union.

The call between the top US diplomat and G7 foreign ministers comes amid fears of broader escalation following US and Israeli attacks on Iran on Saturday, and retaliatory strikes against countries across the Gulf region where the US has bases.

What is happening?

United States President Donald Trump, promising to annihilate the country’s military and destroy its nuclear program.

In an eight-minute video published on the Truth Social network, Trump accuses Iran of rejecting “all opportunities to renounce its nuclear ambitions” and stated that the US “can’t take it anymore”. Israel also announced attacks against Iran.

Unlike the last time the US and Israel attacked Iran, in June 2025, these attacks began in broad daylight, in the early hours of this Saturday – the first day of the week in Iran – while millions of people were going to work or study.

And while the American attacks in June ended within hours, sources told CNN International that this time, the US military is planning attacks over several days.
