ANP fines Petrobras for probe failure in the Equatorial Margin

Agency pointed out failure in fire pump procedures; The state-owned company has 15 days to defend itself and a fine can reach R$2 million

The (National Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels Agency) fined for failures in safety procedures on the NS ODN-II probe, which drills a well in deep waters in .

The irregularity was identified during an inspection carried out from February 2 to 6, 2026. According to the agency, the audit verified compliance with the rules of the installation’s Operational Safety Management System, required by the resolution.

One of the audit’s conclusions was that there was a deviation in the plans and procedures for testing, inspection and maintenance of the installation’s fire-fighting pumps. This deviation was classified as critical non-compliance and generated a notice of infraction against Petrobras.”, stated the ANP in a note.

The pumps are part of the vessel’s emergency system and are used to contain fires in the event of accidents during drilling operations.

Petrobras will have to correct the irregularities within periods ranging from 30 to 90 days, depending on the severity of the failures. With the notice, the company has 15 days to present an administrative defense.

After this stage, the process will be analyzed by the ANP board, which may impose a fine of R$5,000 to R$2 million.

This digital newspaper contacted Petrobras by email, but there was no response until the publication of this report. The space remains open for demonstrations.

The ANP stated that the fine is not related to the drilling fluid registered on January 4th on the same rig.

The incident was handled separately by the (Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources), which fined Petrobras R$2.5 million.

The rig operates drilling the Morpho well, the 1st in deep waters in the Foz do Amazonas basin.

The region is considered one of the oil sector’s main bets for replenishing reserves in the country, given the maturation of the pre-salt areas.
