São Paulo champion Palmeiras had a lackluster performance in their first match after the state title, won over Novorizontino, last Sunday (8). In turn, they lost 2-1 to Vasco in São Januário, this Thursday (12), in a duel in the fifth round of the Brasileirão, which ended a 10-year fast without the Rio team beating their São Paulo opponent. After opening the scoring with Flaco López in the first half, he saw Vasco’s Thiago Mendes and Cuiabano find the net.

With 10 points, Abel Ferreira’s team, replaced by assistant João Martins this evening because he is suspended, remains in the G-4. Renato Gaúcho’s Vasco, who debuted in charge of the club after being hired to replace Fernando Diniz, celebrates their first victory in the championship and reaches four points, out of the relegation zone.

The start of the first half was one of balance and offensive difficulties for both teams. Vasco started with more advanced lines and greater intensity in midfield disputes, trying to accelerate the offensive transition mainly on the sides of the field.

Palmeiras, in turn, adopted a more patient stance, valuing ball circulation and waiting for gaps in Rio’s defense to infiltrate. The alviverde team played with some changes in the lineup, with Ramón Sosa replacing the spared Vitor Roque.

Over time, the game became more truncated and marked by many physical disputes in the central sector. Vasco managed some approaches in medium-range shots and plays built at speed, but encountered difficulties in the face of the São Paulo team’s well-organized defensive system.

Although not very prolific, the Palmeiras attack was efficient, and a shot with effect from Flaco López, after passing Lucas Piton on the right side of the area, took the score to zero. The minutes until the half-time whistle were nervous for the Vasco fans, who, in the stands, took out their frustration on Piton, who was heavily booed as he left for the dressing room.

The left-back didn’t even return for the second half, replaced by Cuiabano. Vasco returned with a greater presence in the attacking field, even without the ball, as they increased their marking to make it difficult for Palmeiras to escape. Meanwhile, the São Paulo team seemed very comfortable, which made the Vasco team’s comeback easier.

Renato Gaúcho’s team started to exchange quick passes to penetrate the Palmeiras defense. After a table with David, Thiago Mendes scored the equalizer, placing the ball in the corner, with a plate. About 10 minutes later, a great triangulation by the Cruzmaltina team ended in a goal from Cuiabano.
